Newcastle United has completed the signing of PSV Eindhoven midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum in a £14.5m deal. The 25 year-old Netherland international has signed a five-year contract at St James' Park. The fee is a record for the Mike Ashley era, and just short of the club
record £16 million paid for Michael Owen and the £15m for Alan Shearer.The signing of Wijnaldum is a real show of intent by owner Mike Ashley after a very disappointing second half last season, where they narrowly escaped relegation.
In other news, Stoke City are set to sign former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson.The England international who was released by Liverpool is close to agreeing a move, according to Stoke boss Mark Hughes.He spent six years at Anfield, with his
