Among the new releases this weekend, the big Arnold Schwarzenegger comeback movie, Terminator Genisys faced off with Channing Tatum and friends in the stripping adventure Magic Mike XXL. If it was 1991, then Terminator Genisys would have completely destroyed Magic Mike XXL as the Arnold led franchise was at its peak, with Terminator 2: Judgment Day becoming the third biggest worldwide grosser ever behind Star Wars and E.T. But its a different ball game now. Arnold Schwarzenegger popularity has waned down to such an extent that he alone cannot attract crowd to the movies. His latest failures from The Expendables 3 to Sabotage to Escape Plan proves that.
Terminator Genisys opened on Wednesday and till Sunday had earned $44.156 million with a $28.7m Fri-Sun frame. It is well below Terminator 2: Judgment Day which opened in 1991, over the July 4th weekend with a $31.7 million Fri-Sun frame and a long $52m Wed-Sun holiday weekend.
Magic Mike XXL is also performing well below the original. The original Magic Mike was a surprise hit back in 2012, The $7 million Steven Soderbergh original earned $113m domestic and $167m worldwide. The sequel earned $27.07 million over the holiday frame, including $12m over the Fri-Sun portion.
